Course Overview
This intensive 10-lesson course introduces students, researchers, and professionals to academic writing and social research methods in the age of artificial intelligence. Combining practical research training with English academic writing instruction, the course teaches participants how to use AI tools responsibly – as research assistants that support, rather than replace, critical thinking and scholarly judgment.
Over 15 hours of instruction, participants develop a research topic of their own choosing and work toward a final literature review and annotated bibliography produced through a transparent, AI-assisted workflow. Along the way, they learn how to evaluate sources critically, identify fabricated AI-generated citations, formulate a clear research thesis, and write academically in their own voice while avoiding the patterns of “AI voice.”
The course also introduces the foundations of social research design, including qualitative and quantitative methods, primary and secondary research, and questionnaire design for surveys, interviews, and focus groups. Participants will use accessible tools such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Google Scholar, Elicit, Zotero, Grammarly, and transcription software, with free versions fully sufficient for participation.
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- Use AI tools responsibly in academic research and writing.
- Build and evaluate bibliographies and annotated bibliographies.
- Develop a clear and defensible research thesis.
- Write literature reviews in academic English with confidence and originality.
- Design basic research instruments for surveys, interviews, and focus groups.
- Understand the structure and components of a complete research project.
- Document AI use transparently and ethically in line with academic integrity standards.
The course is suitable for university students, early-career researchers, NGO professionals, and anyone interested in combining academic research skills with emerging AI technologies.
The training program begins on June 8 and consists of 10 sessions held twice a week in an in-person format.
