WiP: “A proposal for a future electoral system for the Abkhazia Autonomous Republic – A Path Towards Sustainable Conflict Transformation”

CRRC, American Councils and ARISC are pleased to announce the 4th talk of the Fall 2024 Tbilisi Works-in-Progress series!

This week’s talk will be in hybrid format in-person at CRRC Georgia and online.

“A proposal for a future electoral system for the Abkhazia Autonomous Republic – A Path Towards Sustainable Conflict Transformation”

Giorgi Arziani, Tbilisi Social Research School

This proposal for the future electoral system of Abkhazia is a pioneering attempt to formulate viable democratic solutions for a post-occupation, multiethnic region that has endured years of occupation and ethnic divisions. The premise of this proposal is based on the restoration of Georgia’s territorial integrity and the return of internally displaced persons (IDPs) and refugees to their homes in Abkhazia. It seeks to explore how a fair and inclusive electoral system can be implemented in such a complex context, addressing the challenges of post-conflict reconciliation while promoting equal representation for all ethnic groups within a democratic framework.

Giorgi Arziani is the founder of the Tbilisi Social Research School (TSSR), an organization dedicated to addressing the developmental challenges of Georgia through research, education, and civic engagement. His work focuses on promoting knowledge-based solutions and strengthening civic networks.
