Blog | Anti-Western Rhetoric and Visual Manipulation on Facebook: One-Year Monitoring Findings

Year: 2025

Author: Mariam Kobaladze, Senior Researcher

The study examines anti-Western rhetoric on Facebook by analyzing how selected pages and groups spread manipulative or misleading content. Its purpose is to identify the types of narratives used, assess the prevalence of fake information, and explore how visual materials – especially photos and videos – are employed to shape anti-Western messaging.

The research is based on a one-year monitoring project conducted by CRRC-Georgia, analyzing 4,017 posts published between November 2024 and November 2025 across selected Facebook pages and groups. The study used in-depth content analysis to categorize types of information manipulation, including distorted context, conspiracy framing, and visual manipulation, and tracked the use of artificial intelligence in creating misleading images and videos.

The blog was prepared within the project “Countering Anti-Democratic Propaganda Through Engagement,” implemented by CRRC-Georgia with the support of the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA).
