The full-scale invasion by Russia of Ukraine in early 2022 marked a turning point in a trend already underway in study abroad programs among US and other western universities in the Eurasian studies field. For the first time since the late-1950s there are no formal US study abroad or exchange programs active there. It has also sparked calls to “decenter” the field, to shift the focus to the perspectives, experiences and languages of the non-Russian peoples and republics of the former Russian and Soviet empires. Yet the invasion also highlighted a deficit of expertise in the West about the region. In this roundtable, program managers from SRAS, American Councils and ARISC will discuss the challenges facing US study abroad programs in this new environment.

Works-in-Progress is an ongoing academic discussion series based in Tbilisi, Georgia, that takes place at the CRRC office at Chavchavadze Ave. 5 and online. It is co-organized by the Caucasus Research Resource Centers (CRRC), the American Councils for International Education: ACTR/ACCELS, and the American Research Institute of the South Caucasus (ARISC). All of the talks are free and open to the public.
