"Evolving Perceptions of the West in the Societies of the South Caucasus States"

In this talk George will briefly consider the main strands and aspects of Western engagement in the South Caucasus, comparing the individual three republics. He will explore how the very concept of the “West” has been evolving in the course of the past two decades. His main goal, however, will be studying the dynamics of the attitude towards the Western actors on the part of the societies in the three South Caucasian states. George Mchedlishvili has a PhD in World History from Tbilisi State University and a Masters of Education from Harvard University. He is Associate Professor in the School of Social Sciences at the University of Georgia, and also lectures at the Center for Social Sciences at Tbilisi State University. He has also worked in the Policy Planning Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and from June 2013 will be a fellow of Chatham House in London.

It is co-organized by the Caucasus Research Resource Centers (CRRC), the American Councils for International Education: ACTR/ACCELS, and the American Research Institute of the South Caucasus (ARISC).
